Implant Restorations
Dental implant abutments are crucial components in dental implant procedures. They serve as the connector between the dental implant and the prosthetic tooth (such as a crown, bridge, or denture). Here are some key points about dental implant abutments.
The abutment acts as a bridge, securing the prosthetic tooth to the implant. It ensures a stable and durable connection, allowing the prosthetic to function like a natural tooth.
Abutments are typically made from biocompatible materials such as titanium or zirconia. Titanium is commonly used due to its strength and compatibility with the body, while zirconia offers excellent aesthetics for front teeth.
Abutments can be prefabricated (standardized shapes and sizes) or custom-made to fit individual patients. Custom abutments are designed using digital impressions or scans to ensure a precise fit.
The placement of an abutment involves a minor surgical procedure, usually performed under local anesthesia. Once the dental implant has integrated with the jawbone (osseointegration), the abutment is attached to the implant. In some cases, a temporary healing abutment is placed first to allow the gums to heal around the implant before the permanent abutment and crown are placed.
